Just A Good Place To Be Inspired

It Happened This Week
Girl Guides (Girl Scouts) forms in Savannah,
by Juliette Gordon Low.
Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid.
Within a few years, Daisy's dream for a girl-centered organization was realized. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA has a membership of over 3.2 million girls and adults, a significant growth from its modest beginnings nearly a century ago. In fact, more than 50 million women in the U.S. today are Girl Scout alumnae. Girl Scouts is dedicated to every girl, everywhere.
The Spice Girls' debut hit, "Wannabe,"
topped the charts in 1997.
The up-tempo song about female friendship which Baby, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Posh reportedly wrote in just 30 minutes - went on to sell six million copies.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein first
appeared in print in London, England in 1818.
Shelley claimed the idea for the horror story came to her in a dream - exactly how Stephenie Meyer came to pen her famous novel, Twilight, almost 200 years later.
Splash - starring Tom Hanks as a
businessman in love with a mermaid premiered in 1984.
Within months, the mermaid's then unusual name - Madison (after Madison Avenue in New York City) became one of the 10 most popular names for newborn girls.
Alexander Graham Bell patented an
"electrical speech machine" - aka the telephone in 1876.
Inspired by the women in his life (both his wife and mother had lost their hearing), the inventor saw it as a way to improve communication with the deaf.
Future movie star Sharon Stone was born
in Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1958.
The dazzling diva - who began her career by staging theatrical productions for neighbors in her family's two-car garage as a child - can next be seen in The Mule, a thriller about a reporter searching for her missing brother
U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler topped the
charts with "Ballad of the Green Berets" in 1966.
Despite the unpopularity of the Vietnam War, the song remained number one for five weeks.

Thoughts & Quotes
I often quote others to better express myself
Meet Dabi Duck - The Girl Scout Duck
"The Girl Scouts is where I became acquainted with the idea that a woman can do anything. Learning that early on has a tremendous impact on the development of a young girl’s personality. It had a huge impact on me. Girl Scouts is where I first learned about philanthropy and fell in love with the concept of helping others—in my troop this was very important. We did a lot of community service like picking up trash and feeding the homeless. Loving humankind was something that echoed throughout my time at Girl Scouts."
-Lisa Ling, TV Journalist
"The thing I received from Girl Scouts more than anything else was a sense of real teamwork and working for the community, helping others, and it was not competitive. I remember working as a group to achieve a goal or to help the community. There was a great sense of accomplishment in that."
-Cathy Rigby, Olympic Gymnast and TV Commentator
"I think the most enduring lesson I was taught through my experiences of being a Girl Scout was that I was a member of a larger community. I out-grew my uniforms and badges years ago, but the memories of visiting nursing homes or organizing Earth Day tree plantings or my summers camping with girls from all different backgrounds will stay with me always."
-Natalie Merchant, Musician
"Girl Scouts offered a wonderful group of girls where common concerns and interests could come together. We could learn, be challenged, and support one another. It was a very positive aspect of my life and played an important role in shaping who I am today."
-Judy Woodruff, Anchor & Senior Correspondent, CNN
"I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve."
-Albert Schweitzer
In doing your best serving others for free, a lot of eyebrows will raise and sneers will curve many a-faces. But in the end those incredulous to what you put up with to help, no longer matter. It's not between you and those snobs, but with whom you have given your hand to lift, and of course to God who Is watching and noting it in your book.
Creativity is the serene wind that sails through our minds, carrying the embers of life.
-Unknown
"You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and to impoverish yourself if you forget the errand." -Woodrow Wilson
WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?
Whipping up vinaigrette can make you wish
you had three hands -- one to
whisk, one to
pour the oil, and one to hold the bowl steady.
If nothing else is handy - a damp
kitchen towel
can do the trick. Just twist the towel securely
around the base of the bowl to keep it in place.
