Now Christmas is past;
Twelfth Day is the last
To the Old Year, adieu;
Great joy to the New.
–Welsh carol
January was established as the first the first month of the year by the Roman Calendar. It was named after the god Janus (Latin word for door). Janus has two faces which allowed him to look both backwards into the old year and forwards into the new one at the same time. He was the 'spirit of the opening'.
In the very earliest Roman calendars there were no months of January or February at all. The ancient Roman calendar had only ten months and the new year started the year on 1 March. To the Romans, ten was a very important number. Even when January (or Januarius as the Romans called it) was added, the New Year continued to start in March. It remained so in England and her colonies until about 200 years ago.
The Anglo-Saxons called the first month Wolf monath because wolves came into the villages in winter in search of food.
January regularly produces frost, ice and snow
and is the chilliest month of the year in Britain.

has been a tough year for them to say the least with a lot of
set backs. With a new talented coach at the helm now and
a brand new season ahead - we can only go forward.
It has turned really cold here in Ohio, Winter has landed. We
even have a dusting of snow - and I am sure the worst is yet
to come, so let it be. I am really yearning for Spring already.
I would like to apologize for my website yesterday. I know there
were some issues and a lot of red X's and photos and such
missing. Let's just say I continue to live and learn. Hopefully
the viewing will be better now and I did fix things
on yesterday's viewing I think. :-))
So, do have a good day, be safe out there and always
aware of everything and everyone around you.
I have added a few new things at the bottom of my
page and will appear daily there. I will be changing
them from time to time, so do check when you feel led.
Time for another cup of coffee!
Please share me and join me tomorrow!
